re you ready to change the world? The School of Education at the University of Mississippi offers a variety of unique teacher education, counseling, K-12 administration and higher education professional programs. Experience amazing at the University of Mississippi's School of Education.

 

Elementary, Secondary, and Special Education

Students interested in Elementary Education (K-6), Secondary Education (7-12) in English, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies, or Special Education (K-12) will find that the UM School of Education provides candidates with hands-on field experiences, effective classroom instruction and classroom-management skills to prepare dedicated and talented teachers.

K-12 Administration

There are many opportunities to strengthen your leadership and professional credentials as a K-12 practitioner, including a unique Principal Corps program, a co-hort program for working professionals. Additionally, the Educational Leadership program provides licensure capabilities for K-12 administrators. The dedicated faculty in the department are eager to assist students in developing a strong educational foundation base and developing practical skills for their career goals.

Counseling

Two counseling programs which prepare counselors for a Community Counseling environment or a K-12 School Counseling program are available to students on the Oxford campus. Students experience a unique hands-on learning opportunity with professional faculty in a diverse learning environment.

Higher Education

A M.A. in Higher Education/Student Personnel provides professional preparation to those interested in pursuing a career in student affairs, student life, or other co-curricular positions at colleges and universities. Furthermore, a Ph.D. in higher education provides a strong theoretical and practical based program for students interested in higher education administrative positions or faculty roles.

 

Education Minor

(18 Credit Hours)

 

Purpose: To enlighten the general public about the teaching profession with the goal of developing a k-12 educationally literate populace. Issues in education related to pedagogy, child development, philosophy, and foundations are focus areas of this minor.

Students wanting to get a minor in Education must take the following courses:

  • EDFD 209 Foundations in Education (3)
  • EDSP 308 Introduction to Special Education (3)
  • EDAV 427 Educational Technology (3)
  • And 9 additional hours of education courses at the 300 level or higher.

 

Math Education Minor

(18 Credit Hours)

 

[Note:] The Math Education minor is not approved for majors within the College of Liberal Arts.

Students wanting to get a minor in Math Education must take the following courses:

  • EDFD 209 Foundations in Education (3)
  • EDSP 308 Introduction to Special Education (3)
  • EDSE 410 Seminar in Secondary Education (3)
  • Math 245 Mathematics for Elementary Teachers I (3)
  • Math 246 Mathematics for Elementary Teachers II (3)
  • Math 390 Techniques in Teaching Secondary Math (3)
