Description:

The UM College of Liberal Arts is looking for outstanding candidates for its second class of College Corps members. College Corps is a community-based AmeriCorps program addressing problems related to education and opportunity throughout Oxford and Lafayette County. As a College Corps participant, members are a part of a powerful team of leaders united in service to the community.

Participants serve as minimum-time AmeriCorps members and are deployed to community host sites where they serve 300 volunteer hours throughout the course of the school year. Members generally serve 9-12 hours a week and add a new layer of strength to their designated site. Program sites include the Boys and Girls Club, Oxford Public Schools, the Leap Frog Tutoring Program, Doors of Hope, the LOU Homeless Task Force, the Mississippi State Veterans Home of Oxford, and Interfaith Compassion Ministries. Upon completion of 300 hours, all members are eligible for a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award.

Education Minor

(18 Credit Hours)

 

Purpose: To enlighten the general public about the teaching profession with the goal of developing a k-12 educationally literate populace. Issues in education related to pedagogy, child development, philosophy, and foundations are focus areas of this minor.

Students wanting to get a minor in Education must take the following courses:

  • EDFD 209 Foundations in Education (3)
  • EDSP 308 Introduction to Special Education (3)
  • EDAV 427 Educational Technology (3)
  • And 9 additional hours of education courses at the 300 level or higher.

 

Math Education Minor

(18 Credit Hours)

 

[Note:] The Math Education minor is not approved for majors within the College of Liberal Arts.

Students wanting to get a minor in Math Education must take the following courses:

  • EDFD 209 Foundations in Education (3)
  • EDSP 308 Introduction to Special Education (3)
  • EDSE 410 Seminar in Secondary Education (3)
  • Math 245 Mathematics for Elementary Teachers I (3)
  • Math 246 Mathematics for Elementary Teachers II (3)
  • Math 390 Techniques in Teaching Secondary Math (3)
