Angie TracyTracy Named Outstanding Teacher Intern

On April 5, the Mississippi Association of Colleges For Teacher Education named UM senior Angie Tracy, an elementary education major, a 2013 Outstanding Teacher Intern.

During a ceremony at the Mississippi Department of Education building in Jackson, Tracy was honored alongside other outstanding teacher interns and met Interim State Superintendent of Education Dr. Lynn House. A St. Louis native, Tracy is completing her student teaching at Bramlett Elementary School and is one of six School of Education majors receiving a 2013 Taylor Medal, the university's highest academic honor. She is expected to graduate summa cum laude on May 11 and will serve as class marshal.


Dr. RoSusan BarteeBartee Honored as Top 40 Under 40

The Mississippi Business Journal has named UM educational leadership professor Dr. RoSusan Bartee as one of Mississippi's Top 40 Under 40.

Last November, the Quitman native became the first African American to obtain the rank of full professor in the university's Department of Leadership and Counselor Education. Bartee currently serves as coordinator of master's, specialist and doctoral programs in educational leadership. A nationally recognized scholar, she is the author or editor of three books and is the editor of a book series examining capital theory in educational contexts and is also the author or co-author of nearly 40 academic publications.


Lynton DilleyRetired Professor Donates $25,000 to Willie Price

Retired UM education professor Lynton Dilley has established a legacy of learning at the university with a $25,000 donation to create a new endowment to support Willie Price Lab School.

The Norman Edward and Lynton Sullivan Dilley Endowment, named after Dilley and her late husband, is the first endowment ever created for the 43-year-old pre-kindergarten school and will help cover day-to-day costs. In the coming year, the school will seek additional donations to grow the new endowment to enhance its programs. Programming at the school provides a variety of learning activities for 3- and 4-year-old students, including visiting storytellers as part of its Mystery Reader program, hands-on experiences in a vegetable learning garden, petting zoos, physical education classes and a constantly evolving curriculum designed to help children gain preparedness for kindergarten. Ray HoltStudent of the Month: Ray Holt

UM graduate student Raymond Holt dramatically impacted the worlds of computer science and flight in 1970 when he invented the world's first microprocessor chip, a technological leap that enabled the U.S. military to run integrated flight control systems in the F-14 Tomcat fighter plane.

Forty-three years later, the retired Silicon Valley computer designer is using his engineering experience to teach children in Mount Olive, about science and robotics and is on the verge of receiving a Master of Arts in Curriculum and Instruction degree as a graduate fellow at the Center for Mathematics and Science Education. Pink Place museumEducation Alumni Explore Pink Palace Museum

Nearly a dozen UM School of Education alumni gathered in Memphis on April 15 to receive an update on school events and meet and greet with each other and UM Education Dean Dr. David Rock. The museum's educational staff led attendees on a tour of the institution's educational facilities and demonstrated potential classroom experiments that can literally make hair stand on end. Dr. Suzanne DeggesDegges to Lead Association for Adult Development and Aging

Last March, UM counselor education professor Dr. Suzanne Degges was named the incoming president for The Association for Adult Development and Aging, a division of the American Counseling Association.

A veteran mental health counselor, Degges joined the UM faculty in 2011 and currently serves as coordinator of counselor education at the School of Education. She previously served as president-elect and will serve as president for one year.

On May 10, the School of Education will honor top-performing students and accomplished alumni, including the 2013 Alumna of the Year, during its annual awards ceremony at the Oxford campus.
