Only a few weeks ago, we celebrated 534 School of Education students receiving undergraduate or graduate degrees during the May 11 commencement. I’m proud to say that we are Mississippi’s largest producer of teachers and educational leaders.
Dr. David Rock |
As exceptional alumni and friends of learning, I’d like to share the following news with you. We’ve started new programs, hired exceptional new faculty and our alumni, faculty, students and staff continue to show the impact an educator can make.
Sincerely,
Dr. David Rock

First Online Higher Education Cohort Begins Classes
Twenty-seven higher education professionals from 17 colleges and universities in seven states make up the first cohort of the School of Education’s new Professional Master of Arts in Higher Education program.
On June 1, the students gathered in Oxford for a face-to-face orientation to make connections and discuss the structure of the new online program. The group will take two classes per semester and finish the program online in just more than two years. Read more about the program. Read More...
Tom Brady Named Mississippi Teacher Corps Director
Dr. Tom Brady will join the University of Mississippi faculty as the new director of the Mississippi Teacher Corps.
As the new director of the 24-year-old program, Brady will join UM School of Education on August 1 with more than 15 years experience as both a high school mathematics teacher in Connecticut and Massachusetts and as a faculty member at Bridgewater State University in Bridgewater, Mass. He will be the first full director of the program breaking away from a previous structure with co-directors. “This program really spoke to me because it impacts children in high needs areas,” explained Brady, a native of Farmington, Conn. “I was an alternate route teacher. The last program I coordinated used a similar model for training non-education majors to become teachers, so this really is a tailor fit.” Read More...
Buntin Named Education Alumna of the Year
Retired University of Mississippi administrator Dr. Bonnie Buntin is the recipient of the School of Education’s 2013 Alumna of the Year Award.
Buntin, who retired as dean of the university’s DeSoto Center in 2011, was selected for the award in honor of her more than-30-year career in public education, both as a speech pathologist and preschool coordinator in the DeSoto County public school system and as a UM administrator. She was honored during the school’s annual awards ceremony May 10 at The Inn at Ole Miss. Read More...
Major Gift Creates Griffin Family IMPACT Awards, Scholarship
A $125,000 gift from longtime UM benefactors Ed and Jan Trehern will create monetary awards and a scholarship fund for the School of Education to recognize students who display a commitment to excellence in teaching and leadership.
The Griffin Family Endowment, established by the Pascagoula couple in March, was created in honor of Jan’s parents Ralph and Jerry Griffin, also of Pascagoula, and will fund the annual Griffin Family Education IMPACT Awards and the Griffin Family Scholarship. “My mother worked in the Pascagoula public school system and my parents put me through the School of Education at Ole Miss,” said Jan, who received an elementary education degree from UM in 1978. Patterson Wins National Advising Award
Senior academic counselor Donna Patterson has been selected as an Outstanding Advising Certificate of Merit Recipient for academic advising by the National Academic Advising Association.
This annual award is presented to individuals who have demonstrated qualities associated with outstanding advising and service to students. Patterson will be honored during the association’s 2013 conference in Salt Lake City this fall. “I’m lucky that I love what I do,” said Patterson. “Every day I get the chance to work with and help students. I love my job.”
Higher Education Student Named Community College President
The path to obtaining a doctoral degree is often compared to training for a marathon; both require years of determination and discipline.
For Susan Burrow, who was among more than 80 UM graduate students honored May 10 during Ole Miss' doctoral hooding ceremony, this pursuit has helped achieve a long-held career goal: the presidency of a public institution of higher learning."When I started this process, I was a faculty member and division chair at Bevill State (Community College)," recalled Burrow, who accepted the acting presidency of Central Alabama Community College on Feb. 26.
