Recommendation for Licensure

To be eligible for recommendation by the University of Mississippi for licensure, students must successfully complete an approved certification program at UM.

Initial Licensure

Candidates seeking initial licensure in Mississippi must pass the appropriate standardized tests to qualify. Elementary, Secondary and Special Education majors must take two Praxis II exams (Praxis II - Principles of Learning and Teaching; Praxis II in content field). Educational Leadership graduates are required to take the Student Leader Licensure Assessment (SLLA) exam. To learn more about these exams, candidates may go to www.ets.org for practice tests, study guides, and to register. Approved Add-On Endorsement Programs

The University of Mississippi offers add-on endorsement programs in the following areas: Driver's Education, Comprehensive Health, Computer Applications, English as a Second Language, Gifted Education, and Special Education.

Applying for Licensure

Teacher candidates are responsible for following the appropriate steps for applying for licensure in Mississippi through the Educator Licensure Management System (ELMS). Instructions for navigating the ELMS process can be found here.

Out-of-State Licensure

Candidates applying for licensure in other states must be recommended by the University of Mississippi. All forms should be submitted to:

Education Minor

(18 Credit Hours)

 

Purpose: To enlighten the general public about the teaching profession with the goal of developing a k-12 educationally literate populace. Issues in education related to pedagogy, child development, philosophy, and foundations are focus areas of this minor.

Students wanting to get a minor in Education must take the following courses:

  • EDFD 209 Foundations in Education (3)
  • EDSP 308 Introduction to Special Education (3)
  • EDAV 427 Educational Technology (3)
  • And 9 additional hours of education courses at the 300 level or higher.

 

Math Education Minor

(18 Credit Hours)

 

[Note:] The Math Education minor is not approved for majors within the College of Liberal Arts.

Students wanting to get a minor in Math Education must take the following courses:

  • EDFD 209 Foundations in Education (3)
  • EDSP 308 Introduction to Special Education (3)
  • EDSE 410 Seminar in Secondary Education (3)
  • Math 245 Mathematics for Elementary Teachers I (3)
  • Math 246 Mathematics for Elementary Teachers II (3)
  • Math 390 Techniques in Teaching Secondary Math (3)
