Kerry Brian Melear is Associate Professor of Higher Education. His areas of expertise include college and university legal, financial, and public policy concerns, and he actively publishes and presents in those areas. He teaches courses in higher education law, finance, human resources, and international higher education. Dr. Melear was honored to receive the University of Mississippi School of Education's Researcher of the Year Award in 2007 and 2010. He has worked as an auditor for a Big Six accounting firm, a research associate (doctoral fellow) with the Florida Postsecondary Education Planning Commission, a higher education policy analyst with the Florida Legislature, and a member of the graduate faculty of two universities. He is a member of the Author's Committee of West's Education Law Reporter, the Book Review Editor for the Journal of Law and Education, a Regional Reporter (state higher education cases) for the School Law Reporter, and was for seven years the editor of The College Administrator and the Courts, a quarterly publication briefing legal cases of interest to university attorneys, administrators, and legal researchers. Dr. Melear is the Education Law Association's Director of Membership for the State of Mississippi, and is a former member of the Advisory Board of the University of Mississippi's Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning and the Board of Directors of the Oxford-Lafayette County Literacy Council. He is a member of the Education Law Association, the Council on Law in Higher Education, the Association for the Study of Higher Education, and the American Educational Research Association.

Assistant Professor of Elementary Education joins the faculty in August of this year. Dr. Moore will be teaching elementary education courses at the Ole Miss Tupelo campus. She received her Doctorate in Teacher Education from The University of Mississippi. Dr. Moore has served as a Reading Interventionist and Elementary Teacher for Lafayette County Schools in Oxford, MS, for seventeen years as well as serving as a Clinical Instructor with Ole Miss. She has co-authored several articles, presented at numerous national, state, and local conferences, and served on several grant-writing teams for state and local grants.

Michael Mott is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Teacher Education at The University of Mississippi. Dr. Mott teaches courses in literacy and science methods and conducts research in educational assessment. Dr. Mott received his Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from Mississippi State University in Starkville, Mississippi, a Masters of Science in Elementary and Early Childhood Education from Bank Street College of Education in New York City and a Bachelors of Art in Political Science from Stony Brook University in Stony Brook, New York. Dr. Mott has authored four textbooks (published by Pearson, TouchSmart and JWP Professional), a textbook chapter for an international book (IGI International), numerous research publications in peer reviewed journals (Journal of Early Childhood Research & Practice, Science Scope, Journal of Disability & Rehabilitation, Journal of Literacy and Technology and the Journal of STEM Education among others), and has presented at regional, national and international conferences on assessment, literacy, science education, teaching methodology and educational foundations. Dr. Mott is Primary Investigator of the Phillips SchoolVision and University of Mississippi-Tupelo Research Project as well as P.I. on other small-scale grants. Following ten years of employment as an elementary school teacher in the New York City Public Schools and The Lowell School in Washington, DC, Dr. Mott worked in higher education, as a Lecturer, Assistant and University Professor of Education. Prior to joining the faculty at the University of Mississippi, Dr. Mott was a literacy education consultant for the Prairie Hills Elementary School District in South Suburban Chicago for ten years where he led a team of literacy professionals in spearheading district-wide improvement in reading achievement. He also served as a consultant at the Adler Planetarium where he designed, administrated and evaluated large-scale funded projects in graduate-level science literacy and earth and space science teacher education with partners including the Chicago Public Schools and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

Dr. Niemeyer is an Assistant Professor of K-12 Educational Leadership and currently serves as the Co-director of the Mississippi Teacher Corps as well as the Coordinator of Recruitment and Outreach for the School of Education. Dr. Niemeyer represents the academic departments within the School of Education involving recruitment efforts for both undergraduate and graduate programs. Prior to his current administrative role, he served as the Director of the University of Mississippi Grenada Center for three years. His main area of expertise and research are in the areas of educational law and policy. He is currently the editor of monthly legal updates for the Safe, Orderly, and Productive School Institute that are distributed to school districts throughout the states of Mississippi and Arkansas. Dr. Niemeyer is a member of the Education Law Association (ELA) and the Southern Political Science Association. Dr. Niemeyer has ten years of experience as a former teacher and administrator in both public and private schools in the state of Mississippi. He also served over 14 years in the Mississippi Army National Guard achieving the rank of Captain. Dr. Niemeyer received his Ph.D. in Educational Leadership from the University of Mississippi and a Master of Education in Educational Administration and a Bachelor of Science in Sports Administration from the University of Southern Mississippi.

Mark Ortwein began his career in education at Chetopa High School in Chetopa, Kansas. Here he taught language arts to grades 7-12, as well as 8th grade civics and yearbook. Having completed (and loved) three years of teaching-and an MS in teaching at Pittsburg State University (2007) along the way-he chose to pursue his PhD in Teacher Education at Texas A&M University. At A&M professor Ortwein developed his present research agenda in the philosophy of education and curriculum theory-especially in the areas of knowledge and virtue epistemology. He presently holds the title of Assistant Professor of Teacher Education at The University of Mississippi.

James S. Payne is Professor of Special Education at The University of Mississippi. He served as the Dean of the School of Education from 1985 to 1996. Prior to being a Dean, he was a faculty member for 15 years at The University of Virginia. He received his doctorate, with honors, from The University of Kansas in 1970 and in 2003 he was a senior lecturer and taught for one year at Dokuz Eylul University in Izmir, Turkey, as a Fulbright Scholar.
Dr. Payne is a nationally recognized speaker, trainer and writer. He has authored and co-authored numerous articles in professional journals and over 25 books, three of which were the largest selling books in their respective areas. He developed The PeopleWise Series Planners, designed to help children, teens and adults stay focused and organized and The PeopleWise Profile System, which is a self-scoring instrument that helps individuals understand themselves and others. His first book in the PeopleWise Series of Books , PeopleWise Brain-to-Brain, was featured at the Book Expo of America, June 2004, the second book, PeopleWise Putting: Get Your Brain in the Game, was published in 2005 and featured at the PGA Expo, January 2006, and the third book PeopleWise Selling! The Art of Selling Brain to Brain was released in 2006. In 2008 a training program including DVD, workbook, and instructor's guide was released by National Professional Resources. The training program is entitled 8 Steps to Captivating an Audience. In 2010, Dr Payne's first eBook was published Life just Before Death and in 2011 the second book on putting was released, So You Think You Can't Putt.

Stacie Pettit holds a Ph.D. in Middle School Education from the University of Georgia. She holds a M.Ed. in Middle School Education from Augusta State University. Her undergraduate Middle School Education degree from the University of Georgia included concentrations in mathematics and language arts education. She holds K-12 gifted and English to Speakers of Other Languages certifications. She taught in suburban and urban public schools for seven years. Dr. Plants teaching and professional interests focus on effective integration of technology in teaching and learning in K12 and teacher education. Additional interests include online learning, mobile technologies, technology and computational thinking, and related research. He is a current member of the Society for Information Technology in Teacher Education. As a graduate of the School's teacher education program, Dr. Plants returned to the university after serving at the Center for the Study of Learning, Instruction, and Teacher Development as Senior Research Associate where he was involved with studies of best practices of teacher education and technology. Additionally, he has served at Vanderbilt University's Learning Technology Center as Project Manager for the school's Preparing Tomorrow's Teachers to Use Technology Grant (PT3). Dr. David Rock is the Dean of the School of Education at the University of Mississippi. He received his B.S. in Mathematics from Vanderbilt University, M.A. in Mathematics Education from the University of Central Florida, and Ed. D. in Teacher Education from the University of Central Florida. Dr. Rock has taught mathematics in Florida and Mississippi at the middle and high school level. He has conducted a multitude of educational workshops and seminars at local, state, and national conferences in which his goal is to increase interest and enthusiasm of the teaching and learning of mathematics. He is the developer of the Internet Math Contests (http://mathcontest.olemiss.edu), which encourages students to utilize the Internet to solve challenging mathematics problems from across the globe. Dr. Tabitha Young currently serves as an Assistant Professor at the University of Mississippi. She obtained her Doctorate of Philosophy in Counselor Education 2010, and is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor with the state of Florida and a Licensed Associate Counselor with the state of Arkansas. Since graduation with her Master's in 2004, she has worked as a mental health counselor for couples, families, and individuals in inpatient, outpatient, home-based, and school settings. Dr. Young's research interests include counselor development, outcome-based studies, empirically based treatments (viz. MI, CBT, & MBCT), group counseling, spirituality in counseling, and process addictions.

Clinical Assistant Professor of Teacher Education, Pickett completed his Ph.D. in History at the University of Mississippi. He specializes in the history of education in the U.S. South, race, religion and interracial interaction through nineteenth century mission schools for enslaved African Americans and Native Americans in South Carolina and Mississippi.

Pickett holds a Ph.D. in History from the University of Mississippi, an M.A. in History from the College of Charleston and The Citadel, an M.A.T.S. from Covenant Seminary and a B.A. in History from Clemson University. Since 2008, Pickett has taught education and history courses at both the university and secondary levels. He has also taught 12th grade civics, government and Mississippi studies.

Dr. Hephner LaBanc received her Ed.D. from Northern Illinois University (NIU). Before joining The University of Mississippi, she served as the Associate Vice President for Student Affairs as well as the Assistant Vice President for Planning and Operations at NIU. In addition to her time at NIU, Hephner LaBanc's background includes an accounting degree and work with Merrill Lynch prior to graduate study in Higher Education Administration at Kent State University. Since that time, she has served students in multiple administrative roles at Arizona State University, University of North Carolina at Wilmington, Baldwin-Wallace College, and University of Akron.

In addition to serving as Vice Chancellor at Ole Miss, Hephner LaBanc serves as a faculty member in the Higher Education program in the department of Leadership and Counselor Education. Her research focuses on preparation of student affairs professionals and transition issues for graduate students, and she has published work related to campus crisis management. She is highly committed to the holistic development of all students (undergraduates and graduates alike) and strives to nurture a scholar-practitioner culture in her work environment.

Among her honors and special recognitions, Hephner LaBanc was named Alumna of the Year at Kent State University and recognized for her outstanding service by the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators for the "Enough Is Enough" Campaign, a NASPA-sponsored initiative that addresses the rising societal violence that results from campus tragedies.

Tamara Hillmer works with the Center for Excellence in Literacy Instruction (CELI) and is an instructor in the Department of Teacher Education teaching literacy courses to undergraduate teacher candidates. Mrs. Hillmer has been at Ole Miss (full-time) since 2008. She earned her B.S. in Elementary Education from Blue Mountain College. Mrs. Hillmer earned her M.Ed in Curriculum and Instruction and Ed.S. in Educational Leadership from the University of Mississippi. Mrs. Hillmer has taught eleven years in the public school system (Technology/Writing Coach - 3 years and Classroom Teacher - 8 years) where she served in the following capacities: Teacher Support Team Coordinator, Technology Coordinator, Yearbook Editor, WebMaster, and Reading Specialist. Tamara Hillmer was chosen as Teacher of the Year twice during her teaching career and was also awarded the University of Mississippi's Outstanding Master Degree Student in Elementary Education in 2006. The 2012-2013 academic year will be Mrs. Hillmer's first year as Assistant Director of Willie Price University Nursery School.

Education Minor

(18 Credit Hours)

 

Purpose: To enlighten the general public about the teaching profession with the goal of developing a k-12 educationally literate populace. Issues in education related to pedagogy, child development, philosophy, and foundations are focus areas of this minor.

Students wanting to get a minor in Education must take the following courses:

  • EDFD 209 Foundations in Education (3)
  • EDSP 308 Introduction to Special Education (3)
  • EDAV 427 Educational Technology (3)
  • And 9 additional hours of education courses at the 300 level or higher.

 

Math Education Minor

(18 Credit Hours)
