SOE Many Scholarship Opportunities!

The School of Education is thankful for our generous donors who so graciously support our students in their educational pursuits! There are 70+ scholarships available for SOE undergraduate and graduate students.

Application Requirements:

  • All undergraduate students must successfully complete the FAFSA application to be considered for scholarships. (Graduate students are not required to meet this criteria)
  • Application forms must be submitted online through the appropriate application below.
  • Transcripts for current and admitted students will be obtained by the SOE Scholarship Committee for review and do not need to be submitted by the applicant.

adVANCE Clark Legacy Scholarship [Coming Soon]
Award Range: TBD | Major: Early Childhood Education
Additional Criteria: Undergraduate students in good academic standing who are enrolled in a degree program focused on early childhood education. First preference is given to students participating in track and field athletics at the post-secondary level.

Ralph Armstrong and Beffie Conwill Armstrong Education Opportunity Scholarship
Award Range:
 $1,000 - $1,250 | Major: Teacher Education
Additional Criteria: Full-time students in the School of Education who have *financial need. First preference given to students from Lee County, Mississippi.

Phillip J. and Emily G. Bailey Education Scholarship
Award Range: TBD | Major: Teacher Education
Additional Criteria: Entering freshman in the School of Education who may retain the scholarship for up to eight semesters provided they remain in good academic standing. First preference will be given to residents of Mississippi, Tennessee, or Florida who intend to teach in Mississippi following graduation.

Kathryn Webster Barnett Scholarship in Education
Award Range: $400 - $425 | Major: Teacher Education
Additional Criteria: Full-time education students who demonstrate exceptional academic ability and leadership.

Charles Barnett Memorial Scholarship
Award Range: $825 - $1,250 | Major: Special Education
Additional Criteria: Full-time special education majors from Mississippi.

James N. and Bettye M. Butler Scholarship
Award Range: $1,000 | Major: Teacher Education
Additional Criteria: Full-time school of education majors who are pursuing a BAED or MED with first preference being given to students from the counties of Union, Pontotoc, and Lafayette Counties in Mississippi.

The Boyce Family Teacher Scholarship [Coming Soon]
Award Range: TBD | Major: Teacher Education
Additional Criteria: Full-time students who are senior education majors in the School of Education with *financial need. Recipients will be in their final academic year completing student teaching and funds provided will be used to provide financial assistance to complete student teaching (including travel, food, and housing). Selection of this one-year award will be based on *financial need, academic achievement, and a letter of recommendation.

Rose Califf Scholarship
Award Range: $800 - $875 | Major: Teacher Education
Additional Criteria: Students demonstrating scholastic ability, leadership potential, and *financial need.

Nancy Virginia Stasiak Carden School of Education Scholarship
Award Range: TBD | Major: Teacher Education
Additional Criteria: First preference will be given to full-time out-of-state students who are K-8 education majors with demonstrated academic achievement, leadership potential, and *financial need. Second preference will be given to Mississippi residents. Recipients may retain the scholarship for up to eight semesters provided they remain in good academic standing.

Bob Depro Education Excellence Scholarship for Social Studies Majors
Award Range: $5,000 - $10,000 | Major: Social Studies Education
Additional Criteria: Full-time undergraduate or graduate students who are selected as the most outstanding students majoring in social studies education.

Education Equity Undergraduate Scholarship
Award Range: $1,000 | Major: Teacher Education
Additional Criteria: Full-time education students who demonstrate a commitment to racial equity in education and contribute to the diversity of the SOE student population. First preference is given to students who demonstrate a commitment to teaching in Mississippi following graduation. Recipients may retain the scholarship for up to 8 semesters upon maintaining a 2.75 GPA. Incoming undergraduate and transfer students are equally eligible.

Peggy Emerson Education Scholarship
Award Range: $700 - $725 | Major: Teacher Education
Additional Criteria: Full-time education students.

Griffin Family Scholarship
Award Range: $1,000 | Major: Teacher Education
Additional Criteria: Junior or Senior education major with first preference to students from Jackson, Harrison, or Hancock Counties in Mississippi. 

Hathorn Family Scholarship for Teacher Education
Award Range: $775 - $800 | Major: Teacher Education
Additional Criteria: Full-time junior or senior education majors with *financial need. Must maintain a 2.5 grade point average.

Wallace E. and Elizabeth G. Hope Scholarship
Award Range: $1,000 | Major: Teacher Education
Additional Criteria: Full-time education majors who demonstrate leadership potential, academic, merit, and/or *financial need. Recipients may retain the Hope Scholarship for up to 8 semesters, contingent on maintaining a 3.0 GPA.

Dr. Barbara L. Howard Zeta Pho Beta Sorority, Inc. Scholarship [Future Opportunity]
Award Range: TBD | Major: Teacher Education
Additional Criteria: Full-time undergraduate students majoring in biology in the College of Liberal Arts or science education in the School of Education. Recipients will be a member in good standing with Tau Eta chapter of Zeta Phi Beta, Inc. First preference is given to students with demonstrated *financial need.

Burl and Clara Smith Hunt Teacher Education Scholarship
Award Range: $1,000 | Major: Teacher Education
Additional Criteria: Junior and senior women education majors with *financial need. Preference given to students reentering education programs. Recipients must be residents of Mississippi. The award shall be given to recipients from 4-6 semesters.

Ray and Marguerite King Memorial Scholarship in Education
Award Range: $1,000 | Major: Teacher Education
Additional Criteria: Full-time education majors who are entering freshmen.

Thomas Richardson and Alice Ragland Lamar Memorial Scholarship
Award Range: $1,000 | Major: All Education Majors
Additional Criteria: Full-time education majors.

Mali McGraw Moore Memorial Scholarship
Award Range: $700 - $750 | Major: Teacher Education
Additional Criteria: Full-time education majors with *financial need.

Bernard Smith Murff and Marie Murff Duncan Education Scholarship
Award Range: $1,000 | Major: Teacher Education
Additional Criteria: Juniors or seniors enrolled in the School of Education who plan to become teachers.

Ronnie and Melody Musgrove Educator Scholarship
Award Range: $1,000 - $ 1,250 | Major: Teacher Education
Additional Criteria: Full-time junior of senior education majors with *financial need and GPA of 3.25 or higher.

North Mississippi Education Consortium Scholarship
Award Range: $500 - $525 | Major: Teacher Education
Additional Criteria: Full-time education majors who are from a region served by the North Mississippi Education Consortium and have attended and/or worked at member school districts.

Raye R. and David S. Newton Scholarship
Award Range: $500 | Major: Teacher Education
Additional Criteria: Full-time Mississippi residents with *financial need and at least a 3.0 GPA. Recipients may retain the scholarship for one academic year.

Dr. Harry P. Owens Secondary Education Opportunity Scholarship
Award Range: $1,000 | Major: Social Studies Education
Additional Criteria: Full-time education majors with first preference being given to secondary education majors with an emphasis in History.

Jenny and Ray Poole Family Scholarship
Award Range: $1,000 | Major: Teacher Education
Additional Criteria: Full-time student seeking an undergraduate degree in education from the following Mississippi counties: Lafayette, Panola, Calhoun, Lawrence, Amite, or Franklin.

Hugh S. Potts Memorial Scholarship
Award Range: $500 - $525 | Major: Teacher Education
Additional Criteria: Full-time education students who are Mississippi residents and a graduate of a high school within a county in which Merchants and Farmers Bank or any successor has a bank or branch. Recipients must maintain a minimum 2.75 GPA and can retain the scholarship for up to eight (8) semesters of study or until the Baccalaureate degree is received. Preference shall be given to students with a record of academic honors, outstanding leadership record, exemplary citizenship qualities, and who plan to reside in the State of Mississippi upon graduation.

R.H. Price Memorial Scholarship
Award Range: $600 - $1,300 | Major: Teacher Education
Additional Criteria: Full-time education majors.

The Lynda Ramey Scholarship Program
Award Range: $1,000 | Major: Teacher Education
Additional Criteria: Undergraduate education students who are natives of Mississippi. Must demonstrate *financial need and a record of academic achievement.

School of Education Scholarship
Award Range: $475 - $500 | Major: Teacher Education
Additional Criteria: Full-time junior or senior education students who are residents of the state of Mississippi. Recipients should have expectation of teaching or practicing in the State of Mississippi.

School of Education Esports Gamers Scholarship Fund
Award Range: $1,000 | Major: Secondary Education
Additional Criteria: Full-time secondary education majors with at least a 2.75 GPA who play in varsity Esports at the University of Mississippi. Recipients will be selected based on priority of (1) gaming ability, (2) *financial need, and (3) academic merit. Selected in consultation with the Esports varsity coach.

Joan Gilbert Smith Scholarship for Special Education
Award Range: $1,000 - $1,375 | Major: Special Education
Additional Criteria: Special Education majors who and demonstrate *financial need and academic excellence from of the twenty-three counties served by the North Mississippi Regional Center in Oxford.

Dr. Theopolis Pride Vinson Memorial Scholarship
Award Range: $1,250 - $1,500 | Major: Teacher Education
Additional Criteria: Full-time junior or senior African-Americans in the School of Education who demonstrate extraordinary leadership and community service.

Taylor and Sue H. Webb Scholarship
Award Range: TBD | Major: Teacher Education
Additional Criteria: Recipients will be full-time students enrolled in the School of Education at the University of Mississippi. Recipients must demonstrate *financial need and be an in-state Mississippi resident and the first preference given to students from the following Mississippi Delta counties: Bolivar, Carroll, Coahoma, DeSoto, Holmes, Humphreys, Issaquena, Leflore, Panola, Quitman, Sharkey, Sunflower, Tallahatchie, Tate, Tunica, Warren, Washington, and Yazoo. Recipients must maintain a 3.0 GPA and are eligible to receive the award for up to eight semesters provided they remain in good academic standing.

Elsie W. Williston Scholarship Fund
Award Range: $1,000 | Major: Teacher Education
Additional Criteria: Full-time junior or senior education majors with a minimum grade point average of 2.5. Recipients will be Mississippi residents with *financial need and must demonstrate significant potential to become outstanding educators. All other qualifications being equal, preference may be given to students who have served in the military.

*Financial need is determined by FAFSA – the Free Application for Federal Student Aid filed with the UM Office of Financial Aid

Beth and John Cleveland Secondary Education Scholarship
Award Range: $1,000 | Major: Secondary Education
Additional Criteria: Full-time students transferring from Itawamba Community College or another Mississippi community college in pursuit of becoming a secondary education teacher. If made aware, first preference will be given to the recipient of the Beth and John Cleveland Endowed Scholarship from Itawamba Community College.

Dr. Cathy Ward Stewart Literacy and Lifelong Learning Scholarship [Future Opportunity]
Award Range: TBD | Major: Teacher Education
Additional Criteria: Undergraduate junior and senior elementary education majors from Mississippi, first preference given to community college transfer students; Graduate students who are currently teaching at the elementary level, Mississippi residents, and who are pursuing graduate degrees in elementary education, literacy education at UM. Graduate applicants must describe or demonstrate creative ways used to teach literacy and/or encourage lifelong learning.

Mississippi Excellence in Teaching Program Endowed Scholarships

Jane M. Cromeans Mississippi Excellence in Teaching Program Scholarship [Coming Soon]

Ken and Terri Kennamer Mississippi Excellence in Teaching Program Scholarship [Future Opportunity]

Montie Mai Powell McDonnell Mississippi Excellence in Teaching Program Scholarship
Award Range: TBD | Major: Teacher Education (Mathematics)
Additional Criteria: First preference will be given to the child of a widow who plans to teach mathematics and then second preference to be given to students who plan to teach mathematics in the Mississippi Delta according to the established guidelines of METP. Incoming first-year students, including community or junior college transfer students, who intend to teach mathematics, may also be considered for this scholarship. No portion of this endowment shall ever be utilized as an athletic scholarship.

Lisa Ikerd Nicholson Elementary Education Scholarship
Award Range: TBD | Major: Teacher Education (Elementary)
Additional Criteria: To support full-time, entering freshmen, elementary education majors in the Mississippi Excellence in Teaching Program. Recipients may retain the scholarship for up to eight semesters provided they maintain a 3.0 GPA.

Transfer to Teach

Transfer to Teach
Award Range: Up to $5,000 tuition (each year); $1,000 technology credit (one-time); $1,000 professional development opportunity (one-time); $250 for books and supplies (each year)
Major: Teacher Education
Additional Criteria: Full-time transfer students from one of Mississippi’s 15 community colleges who are rising juniors in the School of Education. Recipients will have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and a composite ACT score of 23. Recipients may retain the scholarship for up to four semesters provided they remain in good academic standing. In return for this support, recipients will agree to receive their degrees from the UM SOE and teach in Mississippi public school for no less than three years following graduation. If this commitment is not fulfilled, scholarship funding is converted to a loan which must be repaid. The repayment amount will be pro-rated based on the number of years served in Mississippi below the three-year requirement.

Tri-State Educational Foundation Scholarship (Transfer to Teach)
Award Range: Varies | Major: Teacher Education
Additional Criteria: Full-time transfer students who are rising juniors and seniors and have a minimum 3.0 GPA. First preference being given to students from Northeast Mississippi Community College and second preference given to students from Itawamba Community College. Recipients may retain the scholarship for up to four semesters provided that they remain in good academic standing. The scholarship covers funds needed to provide full tuition in conjunction with other scholarships awarded to the recipients. In return for this support, recipients will agree to receive their degrees from the UM School of Education and teach in Mississippi public school for no less than three years following graduation. If this commitment is not fulfilled, scholarship funding is converted to a loan which must be repaid. The repayment amount will be pro-rated based on the number of years served in Mississippi below the three-year requirement.
